Clean sheet in betting

A clean sheet bet backs a team to concede no goals. It settles on the opposition failing to score in 90 minutes plus stoppage time.

The price is essentially the inverse of the opponent's scoring probability, which makes it the mirror of BTTS. If a team fails to score in 30% of its matches, the opposing clean sheet is roughly 30% before adjusting for home advantage, form and the specific defensive matchup.

P(clean sheet) = P(opponent scores 0) = e^-λ under a Poisson model with λ = opponent expected goals.

An away side has failed to score in 9 of 25 matches, 36%. Home clean sheet fair price is therefore around 2.78. A market price of 2.40 implies 41.7% — the book is asking you to believe the defence is meaningfully better than the raw base rate, and unless you agree, the No side is more attractive.

It isolates defensive performance, which is more stable week to week than attacking output. That stability makes clean-sheet markets a reasonable home for base-rate betting.

Home clean sheets are relatively common in the NPFL, where travel is arduous and away sides frequently arrive tired. That structural factor is real and is only partly reflected in local prices.

• Backing a clean sheet against a side that scores late from set pieces without checking their goal timings.
• Ignoring that own goals count against the clean sheet.
• Forgetting the market settles on 90 minutes, not on cup extra time.
