    What double chance means

Double chance covers two of the three football outcomes in one bet: home or draw, away or draw, or home or away.

    How it works

You are buying two-thirds of the market, so the price is short — usually between 1.15 and 1.60. The bookmaker simply adds the two implied probabilities and applies margin, which means double chance often carries a heavier effective margin than backing the two outcomes separately would.

    Fair double chance odds = 1 / (P(outcome A) + P(outcome B)) using margin-free probabilities.

    A worked example

Home 2.10 (47.6%) and draw 3.40 (29.4%) sum to 77.0%, implying a fair 1X price of 1.30. If the book offers 1.22, the margin on that single click is over 6% — considerably worse than the 1X2 market it was derived from.

    Why it changes your returns

It feels safe, and safety is expensive. Recognising when the derived price is worse than the components stops the market from quietly taxing your caution.

    Double chance for Nigerian bettors

Double chance is heavily used in Nigerian jackpot coupons because it raises strike rate. On single bets, though, the effective margin usually makes draw no bet or an Asian line the better structure for the same opinion.

    Common mistakes

    • Chaining double chances across an acca and wondering why the payout is tiny.
    • Never comparing 1X against DNB, which pays more when the draw is unlikely.
    • Treating an 80% shot at 1.20 as low risk; a one-in-five loss rate wipes out four wins.

    Questions bettors ask

    What is 1X?+

Home win or draw. The bet loses only if the away team wins.

    Is double chance profitable?+

Rarely on its own, because the derived margin is high. It is best used to shape risk in a coupon, not to chase profit.

    Double chance or DNB?+

DNB refunds the draw and pays more; double chance keeps the draw as a win at a shorter price. Compare both against your view of the draw.
