Line movement in betting

Line movement is the change in a price between the market opening and closing. It reflects new information, new money, or both.

Bookmakers open with a considered price then adjust as bets arrive and news lands. Movement driven by large, informed stakes is meaningful; movement driven by weekend crowd money on a popular team is often noise and can create value on the other side. Learning to distinguish the two is one of the more valuable skills in betting.

Movement in probability terms = (100 / closing odds) - (100 / opening odds).

A total opens at 2.5 goals with Over priced 1.95. By kick-off the Over is 1.72 and the line has moved to 3.0. That is a substantial repricing — probably a key defender ruled out. If you took Over 2.5 at 1.95, you now hold a bet the market values around 1.72 and your CLV on that position is roughly +13%.

Direction and timing tell you where the informed money went. Betting into a line that then moves your way is confirmation; betting into one that moves against you repeatedly is a warning your process is behind the market.

Local kick-off times mean Nigerian bettors are often awake for early European price moves before the domestic crowd arrives. Watching the opening hour of a market is more useful than watching the last five minutes.
