Odds-on in betting
An odds-on selection pays less than even money — below 2.00 in decimals. You risk more than you stand to win.
What odds-on means
An odds-on selection pays less than even money — below 2.00 in decimals. You risk more than you stand to win.
How it works
Odds-on prices imply a probability above 50%, and the shorter they get the higher that bar climbs. At 1.20 you need to be right 83.3% of the time simply to break even, which leaves almost no margin for error, injury news or a red card. Short prices are not inherently bad; they are only bad when the true probability sits below the implied one.
Break-even strike rate at decimal odds d = 100 / d.
A worked example
A favourite is 1.25 (80%). Ten such bets at ₦10,000 each, winning eight, returns ₦100,000 on ₦100,000 staked — dead even. Win seven and you are down ₦12,500. That is how narrow the tolerance is at odds-on prices.
Why it changes your returns
Odds-on selections dominate accumulators and coupons, and the tiny margin for error at those prices is why so many "safe" accas fail.
Odds-on for Nigerian bettors
Filling coupons with 1.20 to 1.35 bankers is standard practice on Nigerian betslips. The arithmetic says each of those legs needs to be right more than four times in five, and few teams meet that bar.
Common mistakes
- Calling a 1.30 shot "certain" when it loses roughly one time in four.
- Stacking five odds-on legs and treating the acca as low risk.
- Failing to shop for price at short odds, where a 0.05 difference is proportionally large.
