Push in betting
A push occurs when the result lands exactly on the handicap or total, so the stake is returned and no profit or loss is recorded.
What push means
A push occurs when the result lands exactly on the handicap or total, so the stake is returned and no profit or loss is recorded.
How it works
Pushes are only possible on whole-number lines. Over/under 2.0 pushes on exactly two goals; a -1 handicap pushes on a one-goal win. Half lines like 2.5 or -1.5 cannot push, which is why they carry different pricing. Quarter lines split the stake so half can push while the other half wins or loses.
Whole lines can push; half lines cannot; quarter lines push on half the stake.
A worked example
You back a -1 handicap at 1.95 with ₦20,000 and the team wins 2-1. The adjusted score is 1-1, so the bet pushes and your ₦20,000 comes back. Had the line been -1.5, the same result would have lost the entire stake.
Why it changes your returns
Push protection has real value and it is priced into the odds. Choosing between -1 and -1.5 is a genuine risk decision, not a formality.
Push for Nigerian bettors
Coupon interfaces on some Nigerian apps display whole and half lines together with little visual distinction. Check the exact line before confirming, because the difference decides whether a one-goal win refunds or loses.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a half-goal line can refund.
- Treating a push as a win when calculating strike rate.
- Forgetting that a pushed leg inside an acca recalculates the whole bet at reduced odds.
Questions bettors ask
Do I lose money on a push?+
No, the stake is returned in full — though you lose the opportunity the money represented.
What happens in an accumulator?+
The pushed leg is treated as odds of 1.00 and the acca settles on the remaining legs.
Which lines can push?+
Whole numbers only: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 goals or a -1, -2 handicap.
